The government has inaugurated the National Trade Policy Review Committee to strengthen trade, support local industries and boost economic growth.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Bernard Ayensu, said the committee will review existing trade policies and recommend strategies to increase exports, create jobs and improve competitiveness.
“Trade is a major driver of economic growth,” he stated, noting that the review would help address challenges such as commodity dependence and fragmented global trade systems.
The committee is expected to engage traders, manufacturers, farmers and private sector players before submitting its final report.
Key priority areas include rationalising the levy regime, ensuring compliance with fisheries subsidies, developing a digital trade framework for 2030 and promoting gender-responsive and MSME-inclusive trade initiatives.
The government also hopes to leverage opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat to strengthen Ghana’s trade position within Africa.
